I think "vertical" is unnecessary here. The author may be picturing the initial incision in describing the procedure. As pointed out above, it would not be a complete Wise pattern without the subsequent horizontal incision.

No he conseguido averiguar su denominación habitual en inglés. He visto sin embargo numerosos ejemplos en la literatura en inglés donde se describen incisiones en L, en J y "comma-shaped", aunque éstas últimos probablemente aludan a incisiones en "lágrima" antes que a incisiones en I. Y he visto literatura en inglés hablar del Lejour modificado en I, pero no del Wise. En fin, siento no servir de mucha ayuda aquí.
