From the far end of the tunnel there’s a view of the ruins of the Cortijada de San Diego, one of the old mining settlements: a scatter of single-storey, roofless buildings, houses and storage facilities. This deserted hamlet has featured in many films including 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. On the scarred hill behind San Diego, the levels and spoil heaps are slowly being re-colonised by encroaching vegetation but it will be a while yet before nature has fully disguised the evidence of human scratchings on the land.
