French term

sortie de l'arbre

French to English Other Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Following on from my question re 'talonnage', a shipbroker made the following statement concerning a boat he was selling (which the buyer claims had issues that were covered up by the seller): 'Je l'ai vu hors d'eau, une réparation / consolidation a été apportée entre la *sortie de l'arbre* et la chaise d'arbre (on voit un peu de fibre de verre)'. I have managed to locate the following multi-lingual text which suggests 'propeller shaft' for 'arbre' but I'm stuck as to what the term 'sortie' is: https://vetus.com/cms/wp-content/uploads/030313.01-r03-2021-...
I'll be extremely grateful if anyone is able to help me with this.

florence metzger Aug 13, 2022:
je suis d'accord sur le navire de croisière de votre lien, le stern tube peut être endommagé par un talonnage mais ce type de configuration est marginal.
Jennifer Levey Aug 12, 2022:
more... Also, the ST says "Je l'ai vu hors d'eau ..."

IOW, these defects were only visible after the boat was taken out of the water - ipso facto, the damage was to components outside the hull, and under the water-line.
Jennifer Levey Aug 12, 2022:
@Florence I don't recall having seen anything to indicate 'la taille du bateau concerné'.

I invite you to have a look at the first 2 photos here:
https://www.cruisehive.com/cruise-ship-propeller/74526
where you can see stern tubes extending a long way outside the hull of two different cruise liners, and the ‘chaise’ that supports the after end of the tube, close to the propeller.

It will be apparent to all contributors here that these external structures are liable to suffer damage if the ship is grounded, or runs aground; far more so than any components of the propulsion system that are inside the hull.

The ST suggests that it refers to a much smaller vessel (ships like those in the photos aren't patched with 'fibre de verre'), but the configuration and nomenclature for these components remains the same, regardless of the size of the boat.
florence metzger Aug 12, 2022:
Jennifer Levey Aug 12, 2022:
@Florence A 'stern tube' very often extends outside the hull and the extremity farthest astern, near the propeller, is supported by the 'chaise' mentioned in the ST.
florence metzger Aug 12, 2022:
outlet c'est généralement utilisé pour désigner une sortie de tuyau la c'est la partie de la coque au niveau de la sortie de l'arbre qui a été endommagée..
stern tube c'est une partie qui est à l'intérieur du navire .
florence metzger Aug 11, 2022:
stern frame

stern tube

The stern tube is a hollow tube which accommodates the bearings, the seal boxes and the propeller shaft. The stern tube is filled with oil, grease or water and forms a barrier between the water outside and the engine room inside the vessel.
