German term

Deckelwein

Discussion

philgoddard Sep 3, 2023:
Lancashireman Yours is a circular statement too, except you've said 'metal closure' to avoid repeating 'cap'.

Doesn't anyone see the point I'm making? It's not a problem in the German, which has a specific disparaging term for this wine, but it is when you translate it, unless you do a complete rewrite. I suspect it's the reason why Edith has posted the question.
philgoddard Sep 3, 2023:
Anyone How would you translate the bit ending "bezeichnen"?

I'm sure Edith knows that Deckel means cap. The purpose of KudoZ is to provide not an explanation, like Michele's, but a translation that works in the asker's specific context.

Screw cap wine

Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : This doesn't really work, because you're saying "screw-cap wine, as we call wine with a screw cap". // Exactly. That's a circular statement.

Well, wine with a screw cap is referred to as “screw cap wine”.

thanks
agree Cilian O'Tuama : (obviously no need for capital S in EN) Unless there's another term to distinguish it from Schraubverschluss (also abschätzigally mentioned in ST)

agree Lancashireman : Answer to Phil G: "Even ‘screw-tops’, as we somewhat disparagingly designate wines with this type of [metal cap] closure, are definitely worth trying."

screw-top

As an alternative, in the UK we would call this "a screw-top" rather than a "screw-cap", so it depends on your target market.

By not including "wine" in the term, you leave space for that in the description and you also match the common usage (I don't think anyone I know would say "he brought some screw-top wine for dinner", but they might say "he brought a screw-top"

Stelvin cap/Stelvin closures

The screw cap - generic name "Stelvin" after its biggest brand - advanced spectacularly in "New World" wine nations. By 2011, 90% of New Zealand wine was sealed this way.
