The opposite of my question on "travaux dirigés". I know that a "cours magistrale" is the one in the auditorium, but what do you say in English? "Theoretical course"?

: I`m afraid it is not the same. A lecture is not necessarily offered by a scholar, while a "cours magistrale" is usually offered by an expert among the experts.... please someone correct me if I`m wrong....

Comment: "Of course! It has been so long since I was at school...But now I am wondering how to differentiate it from "travaux dirigé", which is the smaller classroom sort of situation but still the prof in France just natters at you while you take notes."
