I'm not sure it's a Hindi word. It's to be found in an Akbar and Birbal tale.

yes it is hindi word. the actual meaning of 'sadhu' is 'Pious' or 'very honest person'.But in colloquial language(and also here) it is applied for sage. the another hindi word is "MUNI" which is synonim of 'sadhu'.
