真是何等的豪爽之举,风雅之事!

Chinese to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Hello everybody!

[General context: China, a group of people is running away from an air raid, they take shelter nearby a lake, in the countryside, they picnic and seems like they can forget for a moment the war around them.]

倘能忘记了在宜山“逃警报”,而当作在西湖上picnic看,我们这下午真是幸福!从两岁的到七十岁的,全家动员,出门游春,还邀了几位朋友参加。\真是何等的豪爽之举,风雅之事!\
唉,人生此世,有时原只得作如是观。

I am not sure on how to translate the second-to-last sentence, any ideas?

PS. I'm Italian, I'm transalting this into Italian, but I didn't receive any suggestions from my Italian colleagues :D

Hope you can help! Thanks!

Such uninhibited indulgence!

I came up with a few possibilities, the top one is my favourite because I'm imagining that the family is seeing the moment of having a picnic by a lake during a war (WW2 / the CCP / KMT civil war?) either way, it's a moment of escape.

I'm also imagining them talking in 1930s WW2 clear English (like the attached video of Soong May-Ling aka Madame Chiang Kai Shek who's English was impeccable)

真是何等的豪爽之举,风雅之事!

- Such uninhibited indulgence!

- Such a wanton act of forgetting!

- An uninhibited moment of pure elegance!

- A charming act of letting go!

- A bold moment of letting go!

For me the point was 'this is a big deal' 真是何等的 'bold action (event happening) 豪爽之举,
风雅之事! - I was a quite liberal with this - translating it as letting go / indulgence - but I felt it fit the tone.

Hope this helps :)

風雅之事 I suppose you could try "what a thing of elegance!" or "what a thing of beauty" but I feel that 事 in this context is a bit more of this "moment" of beauty amidst the chaos... Anyway good luck :)
Note from asker:
Thank you very much for the suggestions! I like the first one too, and also the use of "letting go". The book is about the second sino japanese war, we're in 1938 here. Anyway yes, I agree with you on the "moment of escape" that people are living in this episode, and also on the necessity of being a bit liberal with the translation of this particular sentence, otherwise would sound very strange. Especially in Italian!

What a generous move! What a delighting thing!

豪爽,这里是慷慨、大方的意思,即generous;
风雅,这里是很令人愉快的、令人惬意的,可以用delighting, pleasant, amiable, agreeable之类的词语。
句型为感叹句,what a xxx it is,或How adj it is!这里适合用what开头的感叹句
