Erkkeri on luonteenomainen keskiajan ja pohjoiseurooppalaisen renessanssin arkkitehtuurille. Se on nykyäänkin eräänlainen sisustuselementti. Sillä luodaan vaihtelua ja ilmettä talon julkisivuun tai puutarhan puolelle.

Erkkerin avulla saadaan lisää valoa huoneeseen, sillä valoa tulee yleensä kolmelta eri suunnalta. Usein se sijoitetaan joko olohuoneeseen tai ruokailutilaan, ellei sitten molempiin. Se nostaa talon hintaa, mutta myös lisää talon näyttävyyttä ja laajentaa sisustusmahdollisuuksia.
