Electrophororesis is utilised to determine genetic characterisation and purity of the seed. Varieties may be distinguished from others through unique ****banding patterns****. Purity on 100 to 200 individual seeds is used in some crops. For open pollinated crops, a sample of the population is compared to a sample from a foundation population. Electrophoretic methods utilised are starch gel and isoelectric focusing (separates proteins by pH) electrophoresis.
