The installation of MRE devices may also provide opportunities for creating and enhancing habitats increasing the number of fish in an area as they reef around the supporting structures of the devices (searching for protection, food availability and using the structures as reference points for spatial orientation), and create de facto marine protected areas as other human uses, such as trawling (which is one of the most severe threats to the marine environment including both benthic and fish assemblages), are avoided in the vicinity or inside the areas of MRE development.
