English term

full

Non-PRO English to French Marketing Tourism & Travel Lodging
Bonjour,

Does "full" in this context mean "meublées"?

Two full bedrooms : one with a comfortable queen sized bed and one with a double bed

Merci!

Yoann Peyron Mar 28, 2016:
@ Alison I honestly don't get it, because in the Hilton brochure, you have a "full-size bedroom" with "2 Queen size beds" in it; so in this case "full-size bedroom" doesn't mean "double bedroom", i.e. "a bedroom with a double bedroom set" in it.
Is it an exception? Because here it wouldn't be "une chambre double" mais "une chambre pour 4"...
Alison MacG Mar 28, 2016:
Full-size? My understanding of this is that full bedroom refers to a full-size bedroom, at least large enough to accommodate a full set of bedroom furniture, roughly equivalent to the term double bedroom, i.e. a bedroom that is not simply a boxroom/study/den or tiny single bedroom.

Note also that in North America, full bed can be a term for double bed.

British correspondent PurpleClaire was having trouble buying bedding on-line to be used in the US, so she tweeted "what on earth is a full-size bed?"
... the basic sizes for American beds are twin, full, queen, and king, in ascending order. The basic sizes for British beds, respectively, are single, double, king, and super-king.

No! It means that they are each a complete room, i.e. one of them is not, for example, just an alcove off the other.

I can't think of a way to express this rather spurious concept other than by using soemthing like 'à part entière'.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : It's not rooms open to the hotel corridors! This means the 'open bunk-bed alcove opens onto the INTERNAL corridor within the letting unit.

Yes, this is exactly what I am saying, "internal corridor within the letting unit"... I mean "a room independent from the other rooms within the flat to be rented".
