In this content I would use the following translation:
Azért büntették meg, ahogy a tanárjának válaszolt.

It seems to me that he got punished NOT because he gave the wrong answer but because the way he answered to his teacher.

agree Zsanett Rozendaal-Pandur : The emphasis of the sentence could be different, though: "megbüntették azért, ahogyan a tanárnak válaszolt." We don't know this without context. But "azért ... ahogyan" is definitely correct.
