Both Lactantius and Tertullian use 'daemones' of internal evil spirits; the latter also uses 'daemonium' in this sense, which in this construction would assume the ablative form 'daemoniis'. 'Pugnare' may be used transitively but is more often found with a preposition followed by an object in the appropriate case (most often 'cum', 'with' + the ablative or 'in', 'against' + the accusative) instead of a simple direct object in the accusative.
