In studies where infants with prematurity, chronic lung disease, or cardiac disease were given 5 monthly doses of palivizumab at 15 mg/kg by injection into the muscle, the following occurred at a frequency more than 1% higher in the palivizumab group compared to the patients getting no drug:
upper respiratory infection, ear infection, fever, runny nose, hernia, and an increase in one liver function test (SGOT).
Since being approved, palivizumab has also been given as a series of injections into the muscle at a dose of 15 mg/kg to several hundreds of thousand of children.
It has been found to be safe and well tolerated.
Based on post marketing experience in over 400,000 infants who have received palivizumab by injection into the muscle (>2 million doses), rare (
