an intermediate adapter between shaft and propeller
There could be 02 cases
Case 1: Generally, in most of the cases, the propeller has a hole and fit to the output shaft. The inner diameter of the hole is the same with the outer diameter of the output shaft. Movement transmitted from the shaft to the propeller by a latch.
In this case, the propeller may not have a hole but a flange only. The output shaft is a normal shaft which has no flange. To engage the flanged propeller to normal output shaft, we need a flange on the shaft, it is the flanged adapter shaft. Movement transmitted from the shaft to the flanged adapter shaft by a latch.
The size of the propeller can be small, or big, but with the same size of flange, and possible to be installed on any output shaft have the same size of the flange. Normally flanges are connected together by bolts and nuts with washers. Movement transmitted from the flanged adapter shaft to the propeller by the set of bolts & nuts.
This case is more popular than case 2 as below since if there is an issue with the flange adapter, no need to change the output shaft, but only the flanged adapter.

Case 2: The output shaft has it own flange to be connected to the flange of the propeller.

adapter shaft connected to the output shaft
The output shaft connects to the propellor. In between the two is an adapter shaft. This is a connector which is shaped in some way as to work with different sizes of propellor that need to connect / attach to it. Flanges are ridges or rims, so presumably they are shaped such that different propellors can fit on.
