I got a bit stuck in this sentence too as I am finding difficult to connect the last two ideas together.Any help would be appreciated...
Opiskelijat suuntaavat toimintansa tietyn sosiaalisen ympäristön oletettujen odotusten mukaisesti, tässä kontekstissa merkitykselle yleisölle esiintyen, eikä mikään takaa käyttäytymisen yleistymistä muihin, erilaista sosiaalista ympäristöä edustaviin tilanteisiin
Students orientate their activities according to imaginary expectations of a determined social environment; in this context, merkitykselle yleisölle esiintyen and not from behind any behaviour generalization to another representative situation of a different social environment.

a relevant audience
It must be a typo: merkitykselliselle yleisölle
I simplified the text a bit: Students channel their activities according to supposed expectations of a certain social environment, in this context, to a relevant audience and nothing guarantees that their behaviour would become general in other social situations representing a different social environment.

for ... important audience
First there's quite obviously a typo in the Finnish text: 'merkitykselle' should be 'merkityksiselle'. Otherwise the sentence is grammatically incorrect and not interpretable.
With this typo corrected the sentence is easily understandable and can be translated as "Students channel their activities according to supposed expectations of a certain social environment, performing for in this context important audience and nothing guarantees that this behaviour would become general in other social situations representing a different social environment."

Note from asker:
Dear Timo, Yes you are totally right, I noticed that too yesterday and so did Marju, she discussed the matter with me in a private message. But thanks a lot for your extra note! |
