French term

module drain-lame

French to English Medical Medical (general) pancreatic abscess
This report on a patient operated on for a pancreatic abscess contains several references to the drainage system used:

"Aspiration-lavage et curetage des tissus et mise en place d'une lamelle et d'un drain en silastic 30 + mèche a visée hémostatique."
"présence d'une laparostomie rétro-péritonéale gauche avec module-drain lame + mèche hémostatique".
Several times it is referred to simply as the "module drain-lame".

I've found references to something called a "wick gauze drain" which is used to treat pancreatic leaks, but am not sure if this is what's being referred to here. According to the KudoZ glossary, "lame" can mean "drain", but here both "drain" and "lame" are used in French. There is also a Penrose drain, a soft, tube-shaped drain, which is used for pancreatic leaks, but that doesn't seem to be what's involved here.

Any informed suggestions as to what is being used and the correct term for it in English? TIA.

Discussion

Sarah Walls (asker) Aug 24, 2007:
Thanks, Sue, "hemostatic dressing" or "packing" sounds perfect.
Dr Sue Levy (X) Aug 24, 2007:
See hemostatic packing - basically gauze strips packed into/around the wound - stops bleeding by compression. Sometimes the gauze can be impregnated with clotting agent. But here I think "hemostatic dressing" or "packing" will be adequate.
Dr Sue Levy (X) Aug 24, 2007:
No Sarah, the "mèche hémostatique" which is a hemostatic dressing I presume - the term is usually used to refer to gauze packing for nose bleeds! - is not part of the drain setup.

Note from asker:
Daniel (and Sue), do you think the "flat drain" includes the "mèche" referred to in the text?
