Discussion

Coqueiro Mar 12, 2012:
@ David I think "barrel coating/plating" should fit.
David Williams (asker) Mar 12, 2012:
In that case Would "Trommel" be "barrel" rather than "drum"?
David Williams (asker) Mar 12, 2012:
The text refers to Schleifen/Honen quite a bit later on, so I'm pretty sure the Trommelbearbeitung here is indeed barrel plating, not polishing.
Thanks for the discussion!
Sabine Schmalzl Mar 12, 2012:
I think Coqueiro might be right here. I often translate for a company who produces machinery for plating and similar processes. They usually talk about "Trommeln" or "Käfige" that hold a batch of small parts to be plated in one go. It is also reasonable to assume that in such a case the rinsing time would be longer. But it is for David and his customer to know what the process looks like.
David Moore (X) Mar 12, 2012:
Caution! I must say we have to be careful here, as we are talking SILVER plating, and not any other kind, I fear we may be straying a little off the path David is following if we talk drum-polishing of stones. Sorry, but I really cannot spend the time I'd like to in following this up.
Bernd Runge Mar 12, 2012:
But you have to rely on your given context and decide whether the Trommelbearbeitung is part of the plating or the post-plating process. I may very well be wrong with my polishing, but that's one possible choice.
David Williams (asker) Mar 12, 2012:
But according to http://www.viemetall.de/das-prinzip.html it sounds like Trommelbearbeitung can also refer to the plating process itself, rather than polishing thereafter. Otherwise, why would there be elctrolyte in the drum/barrel? (Cf. "Die Trommelbearbeitung ist für all die Werkstücke, welche zum Aufhängen zu klein sind bzw. nicht auf Gestellen befestigt werden können. Diese Teile werden in rotierende Trommelbehälter aus perforiertem Kunststoff gefüllt, welche in den Elektrolyten eingebracht werden.")
Coqueiro Mar 12, 2012:
I still think it's not about polishing.
"We use the phrase "barrel plating" in a general way to refer to a wide variety of methods for electroplating small parts in large groups:
http://www.proplate.com/plating_methods.html
David Williams (asker) Mar 12, 2012:
Ah! Like gemstones, agates etc.?
David Moore (X) Mar 12, 2012:
Polishing is, I believe, necessary after electroplating - but I'm sure someone'll correct me if I'm wrong.
I seem to recall that the plating process produces a matt surface which does need polishing, and rotating in a drum which contains ball-bearings or similar beads is the usual method.
David Williams (asker) Mar 12, 2012:
I'm a bit puzzled This is definitely about silver plating. Isn't polishing an entirely different process?
David Moore (X) Mar 12, 2012:
Barrel tumbling... is one designation, but I think "drum polishing" would be the terms you need here - see Bernd's reference.
Coqueiro Mar 12, 2012:
"Trommel" here is used more in the sense of a bearing cage, I think. Perhaps "bearing cage method" could fit?
MalteLaurids Mar 12, 2012:
in a drum According to this link, not only polishing:
http://www.viemetall.de/das-prinzip.html
Bernd Runge Mar 12, 2012:
Trommelbearbeitung usually refers to polishing, etc.
See http://books.google.de/books?id=dhtUX8clSxcC&pg=PA387&dq=Tro... which would lead to barrel polishing.
David Williams (asker) Mar 12, 2012:
I'm wondering if it means "when plating drums" or "when plating in a drum".

agree MalteLaurids : As per discussion, one of Coqueiro's suggestions should do the trick.

barrel tumbling

I found this translation against "Trommelbehandlung" which is an abrasive cleaning process. Could this be the same thing?

agree David Moore (X) : But see discussion entry above
