Kolegos ir kolegės, man smalsu: kokius vertimo variantus naudojate, versdami žodį "mikrorajonas" (pvz. Pilaitės mikrorajonas, Jusitiniškių mikrorajonas ir t.t.). Dėkoju už patarimus.

Seniūnija ir mikrorajonas nėra tas pats.
Eigulių seniūnijos plotas – 14,5 kvadratinių kilometrų. Gyventojų skaičius – apie 48 tūkstančius. Tai sudaro 13,3 proc. Kauno miesto gyventojų. Gyventojų tankumas 1 kvadratiniame kilometre - 3310. Į teritoriją įeina Kleboniškio gyvenvietė, Eigulių ir Kalniečių mikrorajonai. Kalniečių mikrorajonas pradėtas statyti 1974 metais. Kaip Kalniečių mikrorajono tąsa 1978 metais pradėtas statyti Eigulių mikrorajonas.

elderate

Explanation:
Mikrorajonas is a Russian term and used colloquially in Lithuania for seniunija. Therefore, in technical papers, it should be translated formally as elderate, which seems to be taking the lead in translating this term. Colloquially, it would be a district. 'Suburb' would not work because a microrajonas can be in the city centre, such as the Old Town. Western cities do not really have 'regions', therefore they cannot have 'microregions'. 'Borough' is the UK equivalent of 'district', however "city borough" + UK yields only 34500 hits on Google while "city district" + UK yields 138000 hits, therefore one can say that district is more common and well understood in the UK, besides being better understood outside it. A mikrorajonas need not be residential, therefore 'residential district' is not correct. A 'subdivision' is too small as it is a housing development created by usually one developer. While one hears of the 'French quarter', the 'Chinese quarter' etc., these are not administrative units while a mikrorajonas usually is, therefore quarter is also not accurate.

Explanation:
Thank you, Rytis, very much for pointing out this discrepancy. For proof that mikrorajonas is Russian and translated as microdistrict, please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microdistrict. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eiguliai, Eiguliai is a seniunija and according to the Vietovardžių žodynas, both Eiguliai and Kalniečiai are parts of the city of Kaunas, with no distinction being made betweeen them. However, Kalniečiai according to http://lt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalniečiai itself contains three microdistricts. And according to http://lt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kauno_miesto_dalis#Miesto_dalys... Kalniečiai belongs to Žaliakalnis elderate, not Eiguliai elderate. Searching Google using "Kalniečių mikrorajonas", there are no results. "Eigulių mikrorajonas" gives 25 results. According to http://lt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalniečiai, the three microdistricts of Kalniečiai are not given. According to http://www.balsas.lt/naujiena/195540/kauno-nekilnojamojo-tur... and a couple of other sites, the microdistricts of Kaunas consist of the elderates. Therefore I would stick with my answer of elderate.

Explanation:
Unfortunately, Rytis did not give a source for his information, which is http://eiguliai.kaunas.lt/. I looked at the hits for "Kalniečių mikrorajonas" and "Kalniečių mikrorajonai" and no where did I see any mention of this area being itself divided into microdistricts in the Lithuanian websites like it is on Wikipedia. There was only one hit for "Žaliakalnio mikrorajonas" (in the plural "Žaliakalnio mikrorajonai"). So while obviously there is no set meaning for the word and the translator should check that the area is indeed a seniūnija, the translation should be by the technical and not the slang use of the word. As to what the correct term for a subdivision of a seniūnija is should be posted separately. Will do so later.
