Polish term

teorią figur równowagi gwiazd

Polish to English Science Astronomy & Space Astrophysics
Astrofizyk zajmujący się m.in. teorią względności, czarnych dziur i teorią figur równowagi gwiazd.

From a biogram. There's no more specific context I'm afraid.

Discussion

Congratulations M. A. B. We are counting angels on the pinhead, another celestial topic. We are not talking about equilibrium of a star (a related subject) but equilibrium shapes of a star - a big difference. Isn't this about what shapes a star can assume when all forces are in equilibrium (really steady-state)?
In your discussion you use shape and yet diagree with its use.
Robin Gill (asker) Oct 4, 2015:
Sorry, I hadn't lost interest - I just forgot to close the question.
M.A.B. Oct 4, 2015:
It's not "figura gwiazdy" It's "figura równowagi gwiazdy", and there's also "kształt gwiazdy". There's no "kształt równowagi gwiazdy". "Figura równowagi" tells you about the shape (kształt) of the object which is in equilibrium.
Same in English. It's not "star figure" but "equlibrium figure / figure of equlibrium" (of a star, galaxy etc.).
How do you differentiate figura gwiazdy from kształt gwiazdy in Polish? In English, a star figure connotes a polygram.
@M. A. B. : I am afraid the Asker has lost interest in the question and our discussion is purely academic. I was rather surprised to see "figures" even in the discussion by Chandrasekhar. Nothing in my scientific experience has prepared me for such usage, which normally goes by the name of shape. "equilibrium shape" is much more prevalent than "figure." The discussion in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrostatic_equilibrium
mentions shape and not figure.

M.A.B. Oct 4, 2015:
figures rather than shapes I'm afraid that "shapes" is not the correct term here. This is not shapes ("kształty") but physical construct dubbed "figury równowagi" in Polish and "figures of equilibrium" in English. "Kształty" is distinct from "figury".
Here is a part of a lecture:

neutral Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. : As I said in response to your comments, "figures" brings to mind the geometry of star constellations, not of individual stars. Chandrasekhar speaks of "ellipsoidal figures of equilibrium."

It doesn't matter. This is the right term. It's not about shapes which in Polish is "kształty".

The problem with the figures of stars is that it can be construed as shapes of star constellations such as the Big Dipper.
