I believe that this term, when used medically, can be described in English as an over-the-counter medicine. But other sources I have checked seem to suggest that this is a cough medicine only.
The original text refers to the sale of "specifyks" by an FMCG company in early 20th century Poland, so not high-grade pharma, it would appear.
