English term

they bear discussing

English Social Sciences Psychology
'It seems obvious that violence, destruction, and physical coercion should not be accepted in any relationship. Yet they are so widespread that they bear discussing in the context of acceptance and change. We envision home as a safe haven, a place where we are protected from the struggles of the world. Unfortunately, instead of being a sanctuary of safety and support,
homes are all too often dangerous sites of violence and destruction.' A. Christensen, B. Doss "reconcilable differences'

Does it mean that they should not be accepted but they are so widespread that they are discussed in the context of change and acceptance? So 'bear discussing' would be like 'allow for the discussion' or 'admit of'... I'm not sure about it.

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

So there is no negative undertone as in: they should not be accepted but they are so widespread they they are being discussed in the context od acceptance and change (although they shouldn't be accepted...). It's more like: They are widespread and that's why we need to discuss them in the context of acceptance and change (we cannot condemn everyone but give them a chance to change)?

Yes, you have the right idea: these things should not exist, so we shouldn't need or want to discuss them; yet because they DO exist, there is a need to discuss them.

No as Armorel says, there is no negative connotation with this use of 'bears'; we find it in expressions like "It's a corny old joke, but it's so funny, it bears repeating."

agree Björn Vrooman : or as M-W put it: to call for as suitable or essential - "it bears watching" context-wise, I'd go with "essential" here, though
