"% as fed" vs. Dry matter
In this chart, we can see the protein digestibility of different ingredients.
Corn, used as a source of energy, has around 8% of protein, and only 74.4% of that protein is digestible. Soybean meal, which has 42% of protein, has a digestibility of 79.3%. Animal protein sources such as meat and bone meal and feather meal, have lower digestibility, as the protein has a complex fibrous structure.

Base fresca es el alimento "tal cual ofrecido" o sea con un contenido de humedad que puede ser muy variable. Cuando se expresa el contenido de nutrientes en base seca o materia seca, el agua ha sido removida por secado y por lo tanto permite comparar la cantidad de nutrientes de diferentes alimentos.

We nearly always pay for feeds based on an ‘as fed’ basis which includes the moisture.
Dry Matter is the value for a nutrient assuming all moisture is removed. Dry matter is mostly used by veterinarians because it yields specific information on a more uniform basis. As Fed would be the value for a nutrient without removing the moisture.

You diligently spent time collecting your sample to ensure that it is representative, *you sent it off to the lab, and now you’ve received your results. The page is full of numbers expressed as percentages, parts per million (ppm), grams/lb., etc. Additionally, there are at least two columns of numbers – one labeled “As Fed or As Sampled” and the other “Dry Matter or DM basis”.
Most people are apt to look at the “As Fed” fed column reasoning that “I’m feeding my horse, thus the ‘as fed’ values are the ones that I want”. In reality, the numbers in the “DM column” are of the greatest value.
