Sigo con mi patente y la descripción del fluido y demás...
"To set the starting pH of the fluid an alkali base, such as NaOH, LiOH or KOH, is added to the fluid. The concentration of the alkali base is designed to set the pH of the combined solution between 6 and 9, more preferably between 7 and 8.8, most preferably between 8 and 8.6, these pH ranges being desirable for certain enzymes to operate"
Y esto lo traduciría directamente como "base alcalina" pero si busco alkali me sale que en sí mismo se puede traducir como "base" y me he quedado un poco desconcertada...

"alkali base" is a tautology, and neither has anything to do with solubility in water.
Simply "base" will suffice.

You cannot have either an acidic or neutral base (they don't exist), all bases are alkali so the expression "alkali base" is an unnecessary repetition of synonyms.

La confusión surge de que lo "básico" es alcalino, o sea que "base" es una sustancia alcalina.
