English term

(IMS) incident management system

COVID-19 GBK English to Spanish Social Sciences Journalism
Definition from World Health Organization:
The standardized structure and approach that WHO has adopted to manage its response to public health events and emergencies, and to ensure that the Organization follows best practice in emergency management. WHO has adapted the Incident Management System to consist of six critical functions: Leadership, Partner Coordination, Information and Planning, Health Operations and Technical Expertise, Operations Support and Logistics, and Finance and Administration.
Example sentences:
The Incident Management System is used to facilitate the management of public health services to respond to incidents or emergencies with public health impact. This tool can be used to effectively manage any size incidents including multi-jurisdictional incidents or emergencies. IMS improves communication, coordinates resources, and facilitates cooperation and coordination between agencies. (Simcoe Muskoka Distrinct Health)
The IMS is now in operation to manage all graded events that have occurred since the WHE was established, including the response to the outbreaks of Zika virus disease, yellow fever and Rift Valley fever, and the response to the humanitarian crisis in north-eastern Nigeria and Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. (World Health Organization)
Applying the concepts of emergency management, including the use of Emergency Operation Centers (EOCs) and Incident Management Systems (IMS) can help national and subnational public health systems protect populations impacted by a public health threat. (Centers for Disease Control)

Discussion

Chema Nieto Castañón Apr 15, 2020:
Even though incidencia/incidente may be considered synonyms [DRAE: "Acontecimiento que sobreviene en el curso de un asunto o negocio y tiene con él alguna conexión"], gestión de incidencias, in an emergency context, conveys management of discrete everyday problems while gestión de incidentes conveys management of major situations or those with far-reaching implications.

CDC translation of IMS as sistema de gestión de incidencias in the context of an EOC [ https://www.cdc.gov/cdctv/spanish/emergencypreparednessandre... ] could well be considered a mistake and an example of the occasional difficulty of translating contex-dependant "incident" -which by the way may point to the relevance of those sometimes taken-for-granted basic translations in specialized glossaries.

And yes, I get the irony of this all...
Chema Nieto Castañón Apr 14, 2020:
You are definitely right, Neil; it takes no more than five mins to check this out. And yet... ;)

Incidente, as in incidente internacional (international incident). "Incidencia" would not convey the same meaning here.

Saludos and take care. Y perdona que me haga gracia (aunque comparto tu opinión de fondo) que esta gente de GBK med&pharma consiga sacarte de tus casillas.

¡Mucho ánimo estos días!
Neil Ashby Apr 14, 2020:
Really!?!
I'm sure if you look on the WHO website they have a Spanish glossary, or at least their Spanish pages mention this term, the same way the English ones do.

This is from the Spanish CDC (centre for disease control).

"El video describe lo que es un Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (EOC por sus siglas en inglés), cómo se integra en el marco de los sistemas de gestión de incidencias, cómo funciona, los beneficios al establecer un EOC y la importancia de su uso rutinario en el mantenimiento del mismo."

Definition from own experience or research:
A system used to manage incidents!
Example sentences:
MPLANTACIÓN DE UN SISTEMA DE GESTIÓN DE INCIDENCIAS (University of Valencia)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Chema Nieto Castañón : Funny this is not it; "Se ha decidido implantar un sistema de gestión de incidencias para mejorar el procesado de las mismas por el Departamento de Informática...". Incidentes in this case vs. incidencias. Don't let covid -or GBK- get on your nerves! ;)

Ha, ha, the double irony is that I opted out of these questions, and was just browsing through kudoz in general when I saw this one and thought, why not? La OMS usa "incidencias"...
