memes A meme like this is an expression of the feeling that "you" (writer or reader) might feel. It's supposed to be humorous, and often uses a depiction from a popular movie or TV show that captures an emotion. Here are examples of popular meme templates: https://imgflip.com/memetemplates

This scene is from the TV series "Arthur": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_(cartoon)

Is that a meme depicting what happens to you or to bae when they scroll through the DMs?

That's the sentence who came after.

Hi Samer The picture looks like a "meme" illustrating the expression that the person saying this phrase is feeling. Memes often have the form "When your... " or "When you... " (meaning, this is what it's like when...).

"Bae" can be applied for any gender, if that's what you're wondering.

Hi Christine, Thanks for the fun anecdote! It could be short for "baby," but seems to be used more often now as the acronym (maybe depends on which circle you're in). Same function, I guess. I wouldn't want to be called "baby" or "bae," to be honest, but I know people who do.
Christine Andersen Aug 27, 2017:
Thanks! I was told that bae was short for babe, already an attempt at shortening baby...
Back when it might have been relevant, I was not anyone's baby. (My mother insisted I was grown up.)
Anyone who called me babe or baby was dumped immediately.
In Danish, my second language, bae is close to baby-language for what infants do in their nappies (diapers) - another reason for not using it as a term of endearment :-D
Before Anyone Else makes much better sense!!

Thanks, Phil! I'll post an answer.
Looks like a common phrase that only needs a little decoding.
philgoddard Aug 27, 2017:
If that's correct, it's a good piece of detective work!
Herbmione Granger Aug 26, 2017:
bae = "before anyone else" > girlfriend/boyfriend
DMS = direct messages (probably on Instagram)
scrolls = reads quickly through, scrolling down the page

Thank you :)
agree Björn Vrooman : Bae: https://www.bustle.com/articles/66613-what-does-bae-mean-and... DMs (should be lowercase "s"): https://www.lifewire.com/slide-into-dms-meaning-3485730

Thanks! I had a feeling it was a bacronym. Lowercase "s" when following the rules :) Also pronounced "Dee-Ems," so yes.
