German term

Cipran

German to English Science Mining & Minerals / Gems Bulgarian marble
This doesn't seem very common in German, and may not be correct, but it's a name sometimes given to a kind of Bulgarian marble. I don't have any helpful context, I'm afraid: it's just an item on a list of types of natural stone that is a very small part of a job I'm doing.

Does anyone know an English name (or a more common German name) for this kind of marble?

I've found a picture at: http://www.tana.de/tipsdetail_de.html

Thanks in advance,
Ian

Sorry: Bulgarian-speaking
Non-ProZ.com Jun 17, 2005:
I asked our Bulgarian peers for help on this one as well and it looks as though "Cipran" is probably right: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/1064377
Non-ProZ.com Jun 16, 2005:
Thanks again, sarmb and Nesrin. I've also found a "Chirpan", but I'm reluctantly throwing this one back at the client rather than guessing. I'll let you know if I get an answer!

I could not find any other reference, that really gets us any further. I'll call it a day.
Non-ProZ.com Jun 16, 2005:
Nesrin... aha! :-) "marble deposits near Chuprene village"

Thanks, that could be it! :-))))
Non-ProZ.com Jun 16, 2005:
@ sarmb: Thanks again! You've found the same hits I did: a German stone site and just one English-language entry. This is starting to feel like a tough one.
Non-ProZ.com Jun 16, 2005:
BTW: my (limited) maps of Bulgaria don't have a single place name beginning with "C" and the Bulgarian toruist office website doesn't give any hits for "Cipran"... I'm feeling linguistically challenged here!
Non-ProZ.com Jun 16, 2005:
@ sarmb: Thanks, I had thought of that, and strongly suspect that you are right, but can only find one (!!) Google for this in English and suspect that it has a different spelling. I've tried a few possible variations with no success...

DEPOSIT \"CHEPELARE\", SMOLYAN DISTRICT

The deposit is situated at about 4 km northeast of the town of Chepelare.
The resources (331) are of 605 thousand m3 with randeman of 21%. The deposit has yielded a production of about 40 000 m3. At present the quarry is not working.
The marbles are of the same decorative type (Chp1) - grayish-white, largely to coarsely crystalline, with a brownish tainted vein (from 1 mm to 4.5 cm). Good degree of decorativeness. Size of blocks - medium.
In order to bring the deposit into exploitation, it is necessary to update the conditions and to re-calculate the reserves.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks again. It appears that the stone has several names, including Cipran, but comes from (among other places) Chirpan. So Chuprene appears to have a red herring, but they have marble so it was worth a shot. Thanks again!"
