Ovako sigurno može na engleskom, pa ako se uklapa u vaš kontekst i mislite da odgovara onome što ste tražili, eto još jednog predloga. Inače, ovo mi došapnuše neki Englezi :-)

Ja bih nešto ovako sasvim obično.
Well, our PhD students are not at all bad. Ili not too bad, ili good enough, što bi značilo da su ustvari dobri.

As in:

PhD students aren't exactly useless either.

IMHO, this would be the most natural way of saying it in English.

Mislim da se ovdje ne radi o disposable. "Nije za bacit" mi nema negativnu konotaciju.
Prije bih rekla kako su studenti dobri.
BTW, često koristim ovaj izraz, samo što nikad nisam razmišljala o njegovom prijevodu.
