Italian to English: Tragedia dell'Arte ovvero L'Altra Faccia della Commedia
General field: Art/Literary
Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Sesso, soldi e potere insomma.
Translation - English
Could Commedia, comedy par excellence, hide a cruel, bloody and ferocious side, nourished on hatred and on the worse repertoire of human passions? Not just a mere possibility but, in the history of Commedia dell’Arte, this side has seen a season of fervid creativity as well as a genuine enthusiasm from the audience.
The 17th century, which we might call the Chiaroscuro century, has forced theatrical genres to ‘adapt’ to a sort of ambivalent atmosphere, in between frivolousness and obscurity, slowly taking over the brightness of the Renaissance.
Up to the end of the 16th century, Commedia was simply comedy: then it starts to be dramatic, pastoral, boschereccia (set in woodland), heroic…… but fierceness is lurking, ready to smudge the pure souls out there with blood and hatred.
Opera Regia is the tragic genre in the repertoire of ‘Art’.
Kings and Queens, Princes, Nobles and Notables, clash horribly as a result of unhealthy or illicit passions, craving for possession, glory and supremacy. Sex, money and power in short. The ‘what’ and the ‘why’ are nothing new but what matter here is ‘how’.
