Translation - English Over the past fifteen years, the term ‘multiculturalism’ has widely pervaded the groves of academe, and especially the humanities, social sciences and law departments, while also resonating in the public debate on modern democracies and societies. The contribution made by this broad, inclusive concept to the elucidation of socio-political phenomena has been a pivotal one, necessitating, as it does, a revised understanding of the potential reciprocity between a diverse range of collective and personal identities and any human rights discourse . The trouble is that both academic and extra-academic discussions are frequently swayed by the illusion that multiculturalism is characterised by fairly egalitarian relationships between cultural groups possessing different values and different behavioural components; and that relations among these groups and between them and the State are a mere matter of tolerance for cultural differences .
