In any case, there are many verbs that can be used...But to translate cortar de la raiz: it's either Eradicate, Cut Off, to keep the idea of the root...that was my purpose.

neutral  Carmen Schultz: Eradicate doesn't work too well. Hope is destroyed, squelched, quashed, etc., it doesn't have to be one way but I do know that eradicated is not used much in this context-if it is, it's rare& I did consult a Harvard educated Prof. who agrees w/me.

  -> Look Carmen, if you saw the whole thing in a dictionary, why bother with translators? There are many ways to say things...And to say "that is how it is translated" in literature is silly. There is no such thing. Hope is also killed.
