Hi everyone. I'm translating a CV and one of the degrees that this person has received is:
Licenciado en Fisica (Masters)
from the National University of Mar del Plata in Argentina.
As far as I know, Licenciado is Bachelor's degree, and my KudoZ search confirms it. So why has this person written "Masters" in parenthesis? Could it be that in Argentina Licenciado also means Master's? Thanks for any insight. (You think you know a word...:))

Master's degree
In North America, a Bachelor's degree is a 3-4 year degree, generally without a thesis, whereas in Latin America a 'licenciatura' is a 4-5 year degree at the end of which the student must write a thesis. Therefore, many licenciados prefer that their degree be translated as a Master's degree. I usually ask the client what they prefer to use.

Certainly, we are not going to lie to please the client, this would be unethical, but saying that a ‘licenciatura’ is the same as a B.A. or a B.Sc. may as well create problems to a client who perhaps tries to have their degree recognized in a foreign country like Canada, for example.

: Doing what you recommend may well get a translator in trouble! You may please the client, but you will lose credibility with everyone else involved.

Comment: "From what my Argentinian colleagues have written here, it's very likely that this is a 4-5 year Bachelor's degree with a thesis (indeed, the client did write a thesis for this degree). From what Elena said, it could also be a Master's degree. In the CV there is no start date for the degree so I don't know the duration, only the year of graduation. I don't think she got two degrees, i.e. a BS and an MS, and listed them as one item. We're usually proud of our degrees and list them one by one, IMHO; plus, there's only one graduation date. I translated as MS in Physics (Licienciatura) and asked the client for more information. She hasn't replied, so either she's happy with the translation, or changed it herself. The only possible explanation I can find is that this person is taking his Master degree courses but he has not yet received his MBA degree (after the presentation of a thesis). Given the importance of accurate translation of a resumé, the client should be contacted to provide more precise details!

La manera correcta de expresarlo en español sería: Maestría en curso. Universidad .... Cohorte (=clase)2000-2001, por ejemplo. La expresión es demasiado vaga e imprecisa.

As far as I know, there are three steps. In the spanish speaking world: 1) Licenciatura (4-5 años depende de dónde y cuándo, y de si se escribe tesina o no).
2) Masters (que es un curso post-grado que sólo puede cursarse si y sólo si uno/a se ha licenciado en sus respectivas especialidades). Suele durar 1 o 2 años máximo.
2) Doctorado, que dura unos 5 aunque parece como si fueran 25. Aquí sí que hay que escribir una tesis como dios manda, al menos en las carreras de letras. En otras especialidades uno/a puede doctorarse con otros trabajos de investigación.
Yo creo que si en tu diploma pone licenciatura y después Masters, significaría que el estudiante en cuestión tiene los dos títulos: que se licenció en física y que después cursó un MA (Master).
En inglés yo pondría BA (Hons), MA por este orden y separado por una coma. Si sabes en qué universidad se licenció pues a continmuación pones "by Universidad....tal: BA, MA by ...
Así lo haría yo, sin pensármelo 2 veces. si el cliente pone que tiene un MA pues debe ser que lo tiene, y si no pues es su problema y no el tuyo, ¿no?. nosotros sólo traducimos.

Hola Marina, lo desconocía. Siempre había pensado que en España y en la mayor parte de América Latina las licenciaturas no incluían tesis oblig., a diferencia del MA (que depende del centro) y del doctorado que sí. Gracias por la aclaración y saludos.

Las licenciatursa en la argentina son títulos que se obtienen después de diferentes años de cursada según la universidad. Por eso lo más seguro es preguntarle al cliente los años de carrera sin incluir el Ciclo básico en incluirlo en la traducción. De esa manera no vas a perjudicarlo ni favorecerlo.
