For example, evidence from randomised, controlled studies, suggests that duloxetine reduces the severity and duration of painful symptoms (specifically back and shoulder pain) in patients with MDD (Table IV; Figure 7) [Detke et al, 2002a; Detke et al, 2002b; Brannan et al, 2005; Goldstein, 2004]. In a pooled analysis of two of these studies, Fava et al. found that treatment with duloxetine, 60 mg once daily, significantly reduced pain compared with placebo; improvements in pain severity were attributed equally to the direct effect of duloxetine and to associated changes in depression severity (Figure 8).
