German term

Siliziumbirne

German to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng silicon wafer
This strikes me as a typo (0 googles), but I have no idea what the correct term could be. It occurs in the description of various types of silicon wafers, (100) oriented vs single crystal wafers.

Everything else makes sense, except for the silicon ?whatever it is?

TIA for your help.

Discussion

Brandis (X) Jun 15, 2006:
They meant probably silicon cubes or sticks, that are finely cut to wafer form to produce mono-crytaline and poly-crystaline silicon wafers. The cubes or the sticks comprise the raw material in this industry. Worked for Bayer solar AG a few years back.

silicon ingot

These are single-crystals (or monocrystals) that are produced by the Czochralski pulling process. They are rod- or slightly pear-shaped

agree Richard Benham : Muckin' aphasing.//I'd never have guessed that. Of course I believe you 100%, but I never imagined a "Birne" could be an ingot, even one that's gone pear-shaped.
