Chinese term

气势磅礴

Chinese to English Other Geography description of geographical features
从空中看,巍巍昆仑,气势磅礴,粗犷伟岸,群山齐聚,沟壑纵横。
Whereas finding the word is hard enough, what a translator has to beware is that what is poetic in Chinese may sound ridiculous put across into English word for word.

Discussion

Shaojie Huang (asker) Jun 22, 2006:
Agree with Last Hermit I guess this is the problem. English doesn't usually do all the fancy and "flowery", to quote Terry Thatcher Waltz who commented on this thread http://www.proz.com/topic/49428, word choice. It is more to the point. So how can you translate this without making your English sound empty?
Last Hermit Jun 22, 2006:
伟岸,一般用以形容人身材高大;形容山势高大的,就是前面的“巍巍”。作者在这里是堆砌词汇。其实只须说:巍巍昆仑,气势磅礴,山峦起伏,沟壑纵横。

Mostly depends on an individual's literary style. These are just some word choices.

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Points for the possibilities wherestip's words have shown me of doing this job. I also owe my thanks to Ray Luo for his very informative and extended suggestions and to Last Hermit for his optional versions. Indeed, translation can sometimes be a matter of waiting for the right words to flow through you. I think this just happened to me, with the helps I have been so kindly given."

Tentative version FYI

1)Looking from the air, the Kunlun mountain ranges are massive and expansive, with spetacular scenery of the rise and fall of the mountains and the deep gorges crawling in all directions like snakes.

2)An air view of the massive Kunlun mountain ranges will be more than enthralling; it offers a spectacular view of the rise and fall of the mountains and the deep gorges running from all directions.
