Spanish to English Other Environment & Ecology Waste Management
This is an EMAS environmental statement (http://ec.europa.eu/environment/emas/index_en.htm) ; one of the requirements of these statements is to identify "environmental aspects/issues" of the business applying for certification (in this case a national park). One of the environmental apects is the impact of visitors to the park which leads to "la generación de residuos urbanos".

I'm considering using simply "rubbish" but I'd like to hear other opinions. Is there a more technical term?

Doubting myself Much later in the document this sentence: "Debido al enorme volumen de visitas que tiene el Parque se genera una gran cantidad de residuos sólidos urbanos que exigen una buena organización en el servicio de limpieza y recogida de residuos" now leads me to doubt my earlier idea about the waste produced by visitors. Now I'm leaning toward "municipal solid waste", which is a much broader category than rubbish or litter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Municipal_solid_waste). Although it is still a bit strange to speak of "municipal" waste being produced in a national park.

Yes, you're right, but in my personal opinion "urban waste" implies some cultural aspects, as well. The idea is that as a result from the urban development, people in big cities do not care much about nature. At least I feel it like this... I may be wrong

My doubts about "urban" or "municipal" waste Hi, thanks for the suggestions so far. Evidently "urban refuse" and "municipal waste" are valid terms, but I have my doubts about applying it to this situation. Visitors to this national park generally come by car visit a few spots, stop in at the visitor's centre, have a snack and leave. You can imagine the type of rubbish they would leave behind (wrappers, plastic bottles and bags, etc.) applying the term "urban waste" seems like it would refer to much more than this. That is why I've been considering simply using "rubbish".

Considering your note, you may want to go for litter, which means just what you said, wrappers, cans, etc.

MUNICIPAL WASTE = domestic refuse,as well as commercial or trade refuse and other waste which,because of its nature or composition,is similar to domestic refuse
