Busco el verbo más acertado para esta expresión. Literalmente dice "ganándose el rechazo del resto de la comunidad". No encuentro aún lo más apropiado para " ganarse" en este caso.

to get someone to hate or love you

I'm not sure, but I don´t think you could use verbs like win, earn or gain with both "hatred" and "affection", but I'm pretty sure you can get around the problem if you verbalize the phrase.
