Si es que la frase se refiere a que la gente acierta al desdeñarla (a la novia). Pero quizá necesitaríamos más contexto para saber si son los novios los que acertaron al casarse (quizá en condiciones que ahí se expliquen, o si se refiere a la gente prejuiciosa. Si se trata de los novios, como bien dice Lydia, quizá el "they did the right thing" sea el indicado, al referirse a actuar en pasado; si se trata de la gente, entonces tal vez mantener el presente del original, y decir que "están" (no que hicieron) en lo correcto.
