Russian term

Отдел надзора за особо важными объектами

Russian to English Other Other

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (2): Arkadi Burkov, Vanda Nissen

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Vladimir Dubisskiy Oct 7, 2007:
In David's version the 'fire prevention' concept is lost, and that's what this dept is doing on those sites. Also 'specially significant site' does not fit мероприятий федерального уровня с массовым сосредоточением людей.
David Knowles Oct 6, 2007:
There's always a problem translating объект! I prefer "site", although I accept that it often means a piece of land. Your examples of "facilities" are very good, and "Where are the facilities?" settles it for me! (Где уборная) There may be a UK/US nuance!

Department for the protection of specially significant sites

You could put "supervision" but it's rather a lot of "s"s! "object" is hardly ever the correct translation of объект.

I would not use "surveillance" in this context, because it usually refers to spies and spying or police work. "Supervision" is more appropriate here. (I know I've put "protection"!)

"State Fire Service" sounds the natural translation.

I think you have to stick to "Department for Supervision of Specially Significant Sites". Otherwise it sounds strange, and you would need a Planning Departments for SSSes etc.
Note from asker:
Thanks a lot, David. Could you also let me know if "surveillance department" can be used for "отдел надзора" (e.g. in Construction: dealing with fire safety in high-rise buildings)? And if I can use "State Fire Surveillance Department" for "Управление ГПН" or is "State Fire Service" better?
Right. Thanks for the explanation. What if I change the word order - Supervision Department for Specially Significant Sites. How does that sound compared to Department for Supervision of Specially Significant Sites?
David, could you pls. share your opinion on our discussion of "sites" and "facilities" for "объекты".

Special Supervisory/Oversight Department

This is shorter and much more natural in English - sometimes you don't need to translate every word!

I would probably use "site" rather than "facility." Site is more general and can refer to a piece of land, or a piece of land with structures, etc. For example, the US Environmental Protection Agency designated some places that were most important for cleaning up pollution, and set up a special fund called the Superfund. These places are called "Superfund Sites."
Note from asker:
Thanks, Amy. I really like your variant! But I guess I'll have to stick to a more literal translation for the time being. Otherwise I'll have to make a footnote explaining what the functions of this Special Supervisory Department are.
Amy, could you pls. share your opinion on our discussion of "sites" and "facilities" for "объекты". Any other suggestions are also welcome.
Thanks again for all your help, Amy. Your variant will certainly come in handy.

Note from asker:
Спасибо, Андрей, но меня слегка смущает слово "facilities". Очень неоднозначный перевод может получиться. Возможно, стоит заменить его на "sites"?
Думаю, "facility" подошло бы для перевода "объект" в ед. числе, но во мн. числе лучше, если перед "facilities" даётся некое определение, e.g. educational facilities, recreational facilities, sports facilities, visitor facilities, etc. В противном случае, приходит на ум значение "restroom, lavatory". Или я ошибаюсь? В то время как "site" - не просто "a piece of land", а "the piece of land on which something was/is located (or is to be located)".
Спасибо, Андрей. Буду иметь в виду. И всё же не хотелось бы ненароком насмешить носителей языка, отправив наш ГПН МЧС надзирать за VIP-туалетами. :))
