German term

Umweg

German to English Tech/Engineering Aerospace / Aviation / Space Lining fastening
Diese Lasten werden bei der Standartlösung jedoch über den Umweg des Spantes eingeleitet was zu Versatzmomenten and somit zu Zusatzgewichten führt.

Discussion

Darin Fitzpatrick Dec 28, 2007:
Yes, "Umweg" and "Spant" refer to the same thing.
Alan Johnson Dec 28, 2007:
Patrick, I have no doubt that "via the frame" aka "through the frame" is intended.
Patrick Johnson (asker) Dec 28, 2007:
I am still working on this translation and have not yet made up my mind regarding this phrase. Indirectly, redistributed, rerouted are possible, but it is the genitive case "Spantes" which bothers me as I am not sure whether the load is introduced indirectly "via the frame", or is introduced with "bypassing of the frame" and is via another route. Unfortunately, the previous text does not help much in this respect.

Thanks, Patrick. Found it in one of my engineering diccies. And of course I should have realised it was Spant and not Spantes!
Note from asker:
Alan, "Spant" is a frame or former which is a structural part of an aircraft, in this case the floor of the aircraft.

redistributed

just another suggestion:

the load is redistributed

Peer comment(s):

agree Alan Johnson : Not wanting to say my suggestion is wrong, but thisa is what I would have suggested if I thought about it more carefully. Load redistribution is very common in structural and civil engineering. Try Google.
