Scherspan

German to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering Machining
This is a particular type of swarf, but I can't work out what the usual industry term is in English. This is a good German definition:

Scherspan
Ein Scherspan entsteht, wenn der durch Scherung entstandene Span durch Überbeanspruchung des Umformvermögens immer wieder parallel zur Scherebene auseinanderreißt, die Spanbruchstücke sich parallel verschieben und dabei wieder zusammenschweißen. Durch die hohen Temperaturen auf der Spanfläche kann der Spananteil der über die Spanfläche gleitet auch ohne Risse und Verschweißungen entstehen.

Thanks all for the answers, much appreciated. In this case, the process does not actually produce "chips" as I understand them (i.e. little pieces that fly off) but rather a continuous "ribbon" of material that remains intact. Is the term "chip" still applicable, would you say?
