According to the online dictionary here:
http://www.komvos.edu.gr/dictionaries/dictonline/DictOnLineT...
It also appears in the forms ανατσούμπαλος and ασούμπαλος.
Gawky combines the original meaning of ungainliness with clumsiness:
awkward and clumsy, often because of being tall and not well coordinated.
It may well mean shabby, as Spiros says, but I am more familiar with it in the meaning of clumsy.

Note from asker:
Thank you for your comments and the link. Clumsy/ungainly/awkward - these seem to be the predominant meanings. (Perhaps the meaning also goes in the direction of 'scruffy', sometimes). |

Comment: "Thank you! I was interested to know, first of all, how this word is usually understood. Gawky (which I associate especially with 'tall and thin'), awkward and clumsy are all possible words here."

shabby, slovenly
Note from asker:
Thank you. Yes, 'slovenly' in appearance (perhaps wearing shabby clothes) seems to be a possible meaning. |

: ' slovenly'.

clumsy
"Ανασούμπαλος" can be a person who is clumsy in general. It could also mean that he/she doesn't walk steadily. It could be slang or dialect.
