Bulgarian term

Bulgarian to English Other Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs
Another term from an application for an ID. I'm not sure how the different levels relate to US and British schools.
Context:

Here's my draft translation: Education: none, elementary, middle school, secondary school, trade school, junior college, university.

I'd appreciate any advice from someone with more knowledge in this area.

Discussion

James McVay (asker) May 21, 2008:
The language on application forms is very telegraphic by its nature, but as I read this, the applicant isn't being asked here to state the degree received, but rather the level reached and/or type of education received.
Ivan Klyunchev May 20, 2008:
Please ask another question for the degree. Now we have a mixture of answers to two terms.
Pavel Tsvetkov May 20, 2008:
[To James McVay:] In Bulgaria "Undergraduate Degree" is "бакалавърска степен" and therefore is part of "висше образование". Your best choice (unless there is something we do not understand and have not thought about) should be "Associate Degree".
Pavel Tsvetkov May 20, 2008:
invguy May 20, 2008:
to "полувисше" or to uni. Also, "полувисше" is typically a vocational/trade type of education: it produces qualified technical personnel (but not engineers), nurses/paramedics (but not doctors), librarians (but not literature/language experts).
invguy May 20, 2008:
Not sure how (and if at all) it relates to the US system, but IMO one thing needs to be very clear: "полувисше" is not a preliminary/intermediate stage towards "висше" (university education) but its *alternative*. From secondary school you go either to
Ivan Klyunchev May 19, 2008:
Undergraduate education corresponds to bachelor's degree in universities, usually 4 years.
James McVay (asker) May 19, 2008:
I love it when natives argue, but this is getting a lot more complicated than it needs to be. I get the impression that "полувисше образование" is undergraduate education. Then does"висше образование" in Bulgaria equate to a grad school education?
Ivan Klyunchev May 19, 2008:
natasha stoyanova May 19, 2008:
Length of programmes Specialist - 3 years
Bachelor - 4 years
Master - 1.5 years
Doctor - 3 years after the Master’s degree.
The academic year consists of two semesters.
natasha stoyanova May 19, 2008:

Ivan Klyunchev May 19, 2008:
Ivan Klyunchev May 19, 2008:
Ivan Klyunchev May 19, 2008:
natasha stoyanova May 19, 2008:
University College or College of Higher education
James McVay (asker) May 19, 2008:
I should have mentioned that there's a spot lower on the form to indicate the degree received.
Ivan Klyunchev May 19, 2008:
Misprint: Lingvo 12.
Ivan Klyunchev May 19, 2008:
I think that three-year junior college is closest translation because "полувисше" was 3 years long.
Ivan Klyunchev May 19, 2008:
специалиста [associate ; associate in arts; associate in science].
Ivan Klyunchev May 19, 2008:
natasha stoyanova May 19, 2008:
основно = primary; средно = secondary education / high school; средно-специално = vocational training & education;

specialised/advanced college education

Specialised/advanced refers to a specific educational feature - e.g. advanced technical college - in BG

neutral Ivan Klyunchev : three-year junior college

Associate Degree

The Bulgarian term means lower education than the Bachelor's degree, but still a college degree. It seems to me that the Associate Degree is the closest.

Actually, there is a difference between a college and a university. You cannot earn a Bachelor's degree at a college.

Please see part of the definition of this word.

college
1. an institution of higher learning, esp. one providing a general or liberal arts education rather than technical or professional training. Compare university.
2. a constituent unit of a university, furnishing courses of instruction in the liberal arts and sciences, usually leading to a bachelor's degree.
3. an institution for vocational, technical, or professional instruction, as in medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, or music, often a part of a university.
Peer comment(s):

agree Yavor Dimitrov : A degree granted usually by two-year colleges or the first step towards a bachelor's degree.

Vocational education has diversified over the 20th century and now exists in industries such as retail, tourism, information technology, funeral services and cosmetics, as well as in the traditional crafts and cottage industries.
disagree palilula (X) : Vocational is a lower level of school training than AAS (AAS is Associate of Applied Science;I believe there is Associate of Arts, as well).

what do you mean by AAS? Vocational is not a degree, this describes the type of education
disagree Yatagan : Vocational Education equals Техникум
