agree  Carol Gullidge: According to Collins, this is right, as an adjective, or a noun referring to a person. They give Catalonian, but refer it back to Catalan, so I guess this makes it the preferred usage

I am sure there could be some instances where Catalonian as an adjective sounds more appropriate than Catalan.
Maybe as in Catalonian hospitality:

Also, the fact that Catalan is spoken in some regions outside of Catalonia might be a reason to use Catalonian when referring to something that only pertains to the region of Catalonia. Again, one might then opt for "of Catalonia" instead.

I think the problem might be that neither version is more or less "correct" but that "Catalan" has been used more often. One can find pretty much anything described as Catalan, including the film festival.
On the other hand, I do not think it is wrong to use Catalonian in certain contexts.

  -> no, not the same; in German, katalanisch (=Catalan/Catalonian) is used way more than the English "Catalonian" because Katalan (Catalan) is the language only and Katalane/Katalanin (=Catalan) the person only (IMO). + see my comments

"Catalan Film Festival" = a film festival held in Catalan showing films from all over the world.

"Catalonian Film Festival" a film festival just showing Catalonian films or films made in Catalan.
