I'm (still) working on the translation of a performance appraisal form. Employee performance is measured against several key competencies. This term occurs in the description of one of these competencies (i.e. innovation).

Comment: "Thanks everybody for helping me to crack this one on the verge of the New Year! Special thanks to Lianne for pointing out all the pitfalls for this term :-)
I've finally chosen for a translation that comes closest to Dave's answer: (Demonstrate a) reflective and critical approach to own work and thinking. Best wishes to all for 2009!"

application of critical faculties in thought and practice
Not a literal translation and no doubt someone will come up with something punchier but just in case they don't - this is what comes to mind.

(applied) critical thinking
Innovation, critical thinking....
Critical attitude is meestal iets negatiefs: "overcome your critical attitude...."
FOR HOLDING PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL INTERVIEWS AND ASSESSMENT INTERVIEWS):
6 Illustrates academic skills in word and deed4
4: Academic skills can include: displaying a critical attitude and reflection on one’s own behaviour and the teaching materials; or
analysing a problem, looking for connections and the like.
http://www.tilburguniversity.nl/employees/terms-of-employmen...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_thinking
http://www.criticalthinking.org/articles/applying-a-critical...

having a problem-solving attitude
Without question it is about 'attitude'.
The eventual purpose of the willingness and ability to approach work and think critically is to solve problems, in which one is immersed in a specific work environment.
On the other hand, the main task of the function concerned is not known. Is the main task to find the truth, whereby objectivity and integrity are of utmost importance? Or is the mission about finding creative solutions? Or just finding practical solutions? In the pursuit of intellectuality?
