social work
Looking for the translation of sociální kurátor and I just can't accept that it's a probation officer (Chromá, Fronek...) after reading this explanation from ABZ.cz:
Sociální kurátor je specializovaný sociální pracovník, který na základě diagnostické činnosti a ve spolupráci s dalšími institucemi poskytuje sociální služby a dávky. Zároveň poskytuje, doporučuje, případně zprostředkovává sociální, právní a psychologickou pomoc osobám, kterým hrozí bez pomoci společnosti sociální vyloučení a propadnutí se do chudoby, z důvodu jejich tíživé životní situace.
or this job description from Melnik:

So what kind of social worker is a sociální kurátor? Caseworker does not seem to fit ...

social worker
Nice and simple. In the UK, at least - I work very closely with social workers in my line of work and this is exactly what they do. You are right in that it is not a probation officer - they come further down the line once the person has committed an offence, although they work closely together. Also related is the 'guardian ad litem', or 'children's guardian' - see previous kudos entry.

I don't know what the system is in the USA, but in the UK a social worker covers all of these areas. However, it is possible to work on a specialist social work team or do do a diploma in specialist social work http://www.rdlearning.org.uk/courseDetails.asp?ID=38949 - it all depends on the country to which your translation is relevant :)

IMO 'sociální pracovník' is somebody who works in the field of the social services, and the 'kurátor' is a social worker, which is a highly specialist profession in itself, no matter what many people may think :)

Indeed - that link refers to the Czech Republic - I was talking about in a UK context. I think I worded my last comment poorly. In UK terms a 'kurátor' corresponds to 'social worker'.
Each country has a different system - if your translation is not UK-relevant, then ignore all of the above :)

Thanks, Gerry. So what is the difference between a sociální kurátor and a sociální pracovník? See the definition above ... a sociální kurátor is a specialized sociální pracovník ... |
Appealing idea, but according to this http://socialnirevue.cz/item/socialni-pracovnik-a-pracovnik-v-socialnich-sluzbach there is a difference between a sociání pracovník and a pracovník v sociálních službách. |

There is no single satisfactory translation as each system has its own terminology

Apolonia Vanova
: they only work with cases one individual or family at a time. 'Curator' is the head of all, assigns cases to individual social workers, he is the main decision maker.

not true - in the UK a social worker has several families to look after

Comment: "Thanks, Gerry. I consulted with some social workers and they suggested s.w. or case manager, but the latter term is very general and does not only refer to social workers. "

Katarina, have you ever heard that term uttered by an American or read it in a book or magazine before? |
No problem, I know I've been guilty of being too quick to press the -send- button :) |
You think at 2 am I would catch a minor grammatical error in Slovak :D :D |

2/One who has the care and superintendence of anything, as of a museum; a custodian; a keeper.
3/One appointed to act as guardian of the estate of a person not legally competent to manage it, or of an absentee; a trustee; a guardian.

Elizabeth, yes I did. Actually, I hear it very often (in my profession as a secondary school teacher in Ontario) when social workers come to our school to help students with problems at home, school...etc. Social workers talk about “our curator” as their ‘boss’ would say or advise as to do….
Other countries or provinces of Canada could possibly use a different word. I hope it helps.

: I'm intrigued - the only references to 'curator' in Ontario refer to museums - I am prepared to believe that you have heard this term, but it must be an informal usage
