Ja zwykle zastępuję ten zwrot w tłumaczeniach określeniem kraju - uważam, że domyślnie chodzi o polskie prawo handlowe, więc tłumaczę jako "Polish joint stock company"

I have to agree with you although as a native speaker of English, I have no idea what this phrase is supposed to mean.
We have completely different company structures in English speaking countries so terms like SA and Sp z o o are nigh impossible to translate.
"Joint Stock Company" is conventionally used to translate "SA" although this phrase conjures up some 17th century entity like the Dutch East India Company in my mind.
It might be an idea to add a footnote.
I cannot imagine what else "prawo handlowe" could possibly mean.
We're obviously looking for a particular TYPE of SA that has no satisfactory translation in English.
Apropos SA and Sp z o o generally:
(i) AFAIK, ALL companies have shares in English speaking countries.
(ii) it is unheard of for a company NOT to limit its liability (Sp z o o) as that is usually the main, if not the sole, purpose of creating a company. I daresay, however, that this foolhardy option is open to people.
(iii) We generally distinguish between "public" (i.e. listed on the Stock Exchange) and "private" companies.

: all companies are "commercial law companies", it just means they are created according to some acts on limited/stock company.
