I agree entirely. Fatherland is too laden with German military connotations (also WW1) to be used here. Unless that's the intent,which I don't think is the case.

Another thing to consider: as unfair as it may be, the word "fatherland" has NS-Zeit connotations to many English speakers. Search the word "fatherland" in the English-language Google and see what comes up on the first page. If this translation is for a general audience and you want to avoid any confusion, I'd stick with "homeland" or "home country."

Unfair to be sure, but worth knowing this connotation, since it does exist.

I would definitely keep the "Vaterland"
Could even make it "Good riddance dear Vaterland" if the idea is that the singer (or whoever) is sick of the place and glad to see the back of it!!!!

Etwas freier übersetzt. Ich würde Vaterland nicht unbedingt übersetzen, das hat m.E. etwas andere Konnotationen im Englischen (totalitarian state fällt mir dazu ein als Beispiel).
