Norwegian term

gråpapir

Norwegian to English Other Other type of paper
gråpapir
Used in packaging to fill gaps, or various other senses (e.g. Christmas paper that can't definitely be recycled due to its shine, etc.).
What's this known as in English please, or what does it mean in Norwegian (grey paper doesn't mean anything to me). Not sure whether pro or non-pro.
TIA

Discussion

Pernille Chapman Nov 14, 2009:
Surely it depends on the context... What caught my eye was the fact that the asker specified "Used in packaging to fill gaps". While I agree that my suggestion might not be ideal for the glossary, it still seems to fit (some of) the context in this case. I also agree that 'kraft paper' would probably work as a generic term (quote from packaging machine manual: "The XX™ Paper Cushioning System creates on-demand protective paper cushioning material from a multi-web roll of kraft paper"). So, if anyone disagrees with the glossary entry, I believe it's possible for any logged-in member to edit this as they wish?
jeffrey engberg Nov 14, 2009:
You are quite right Michele, cushioning is wrong Cushioning is completely wrong for gråpapir in any context.
Pakkepapir would be more suitable.
Michele Fauble Nov 13, 2009:
'Paper cushioning; packing paper' may (or may not) be an acceptable translation in this context, but I'm not convinced that 'paper cushioning' is an accurate term for the glossary. "Cushioning" is a possible use, not the translation of 'gråpapir'.

Helen Johnson (asker) Nov 12, 2009:
Intended use is for filling spaces inbetween articles that are packed in a cardboard box.
EC Translate Nov 12, 2009:
A bit more context What is the intended use? Packing or wrapping material? It can also just be unbleached paper which is grey.

paper cushioning; packing paper

As it happens, I'm currently translating a manual for a machine which cuts up various types of paper to be used as packaging material. The English term used throughout is 'cushioning paper'; 'packing paper' might work, too, if you prefer a broader term.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Michele Fauble : 'Paper cushioning'/'cushioning paper' only works if that is what it is actually being used for. 'Packing paper' is essentially the same answer as I suggested.

brown (packing) paper

The paper is actually brown, not gray.

Brown paper packages.

Sometimes called 'plain brown paper' in English.
Peer comment(s):

agree lingo_montreal : White or brown paper is used in filling boxes or packing fragile objects in N. America; I therefore think that the generic "packing paper" (without the colour adjective) would suffice here.

kraft paper

I think "packing paper" is a term most used for the protective (white) stuff inside a package or box.
Kraft (from the German word for strong) is the role of brown stuff...
Often also used for drawing on at kindergartens and art schools.

Gråpapir was the popular name, but its original name was "kraftpapir".
In Norway it was originally grey in color.
