agree Andrew Campbell : That's what I would have said

Thank you Andrew
agree claudiocambon : He/she may already be a doctor now pursuing the additonal degree of the Ph.D, whereas in the US they are pursued together, but for all intents and purposes this is the equivalent here in the US.

neutral Michael Korovkin : Lionel,4 the luck of space,I transfer from your comments in my entry:in this case you would have to put "senior Ph.D. student" for he's almost done, see what I mean?

Michael, in US at least, there's a program called "MD-PhD" where students take both degrees. They could already be MD, but still they are called "MD-PhD student" as I guess it is this question. What's senior PhD student? and what about MD ?

MD–ABD

... usually, after ABD one should also put the specialisation field (in brackets); but if there's none mentioned there's little you can do.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lionel_M (X) : Michael, excuse me, but what is "ABD" ? Thanks Michael. Please note that PhD states for "Doctor of Phylosophy" (not "doctorandus")//Indeed, that's why I suggested "student"

"All But Dissertation" (widely used nowadays, instead of the older and "posher" "Doctorandus"). Exactly. "Doctorandus" is not a Ph.D. but the one in the process of BECOMING a Doctor of Philosophy ("Dottorando" – a Ph.D. Candidate, an ABD)
